ON CARTOON CHARACTER CREATION

AS INTELLECTUAL / COLLATERAL PROPERTIES FOR CORPORATE AND BRAND INDENTITY

One of my favorite kinds of projects is the creation of brand / product / corporate characters as part of an identity package. Of course they are not appropriate for every application, but for many kinds of business they are eminently practical and productive. Not only are they among the most unique of proprietary images in advertising, but they are some of the most productive and enduring. The cartoon images presented in this section of my portfolio remain my property and are registered with the Library of congress along with three-dimensional models, photography and the year of their creation. When used by a particular client they were used with the understanding that it was a one time right of usage only for that specific application.

Geary The Gear

This character was developed for the 1997 children's summer camp program of the Baltimore Museum of Industry as part of their 200 year, Baltimore City Bicentennial Program. The "History Day Camp" was the official summer camp of the Baltimore Bicentennial. The images of Geary the Gear were used in all printed promotional collateral, advertisements, and as the primary image on tee-shirts issued to all children attending this educational camp.

This character was developed as part of a proposed marketing package for WRDX Radio in 1989. The package was not purchased by the client and all rights to this character are retained.
